Andrographis is the superhero herb that’s scientifically proven to boost immunity

Every family has a trusty remedy to guard against colds and boost overall wellbeing, often comprising ingredients like lemon, honey, ginger, turmeric, or various tinctures. One unsung hero of this therapeutic lineup, however, is a herb called andrographis. Though it may not enjoy the fame of remedies like echinacea, scientific findings indicate it could be a powerful ally in our battle against diseases.

A Snapshot of Andrographis

Hailing from tropical regions, particularly Asia, Andrographis paniculata is a small green shrub widely used in Ayurvedic medicine to combat fever and bolster immunity. In fact, a 2014 study demonstrated that it could soothe upper respiratory tract infections and even curtail the number of sick days taken. Historically, it's thought (though not proven) to have hastened the end of the Spanish flu epidemic in India back in 1920. Interestingly, in Sweden, pharmacists are more likely to suggest andrographis for fighting a cold than echinacea.

Understanding Andrographis' Action Mechanism

The crux of andrographis' potent immune support lies in its active constituents known as andrographolides, explains Alice Mackintosh, Co-founder and Nutritionist at Equi London. Current studies hint at the plant extract's role in reducing bacterial load post-infection, controlling inflammation – crucial for long-term recovery – and thwarting the formation of sticky deposits (or biofilms) that bacteria produce on mucus membranes in the gut and lungs.

Andrographis and Pandemic Awareness

In the aftermath of the pandemic, we have become more conscious of our health and immunity than ever. While herbal remedies like andrographis cannot replace vaccines or standard COVID-19 treatment, some evidence points to it potentially mitigating the long-term impact of the virus. A study conducted last year hinted at andrographis' ability to quell excessive inflammation – a damaging effect when uncontrolled – especially when combined with melatonin, the hormone regulating our sleep cycle. "More research is definitely needed here, but we expect this to unfold as work goes on to find supportive ingredients that help balance our immune system," says Alice.

In a world increasingly attuned to health and immunity, andrographis might be the herbal powerhouse you've been overlooking. As science continues to peel back the layers of this potent plant, it's a good time to consider adding andrographis to your immunity-boosting arsenal.
