Fah Talai Jone (Andrographis) herb shows promise in treating sore throat and reducing COVID-19 related thrombosis

Thai researchers have brought Andrographis Paniculata, a familiar herb known locally as Fah Talai Jone, into the spotlight with findings that could revolutionize our approach to throat relief and potentially reduce complications from COVID-19.

The Chaophya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital Foundation and Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital joined forces to develop and test a throat spray based on Andrographis Paniculata. Their collaborative research has given birth to a product capable of alleviating symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and coughing. Notably, this spray has shown a performance matching that of foreign herbal extracts, but with a quicker recovery period and at a lower cost.

This development can reduce reliance on imported throat sprays, subsequently benefiting the local economy by offering a new source of income for farmers. However, it's the potential of Andrographis Paniculata in the context of COVID-19 that's causing a real stir.

The herb has demonstrated potential in reducing the incidence of thrombosis, a serious complication following COVID-19 infection, which can lead to fatal consequences. Through proteomics research, a professor from Mahidol University unveiled that patients who consumed Andrographis Paniculata in the form of a coarsely ground powder at a dose of 180 mg/day for 5 days exhibited a protein that could diminish the severity of COVID-19. The method of action involves reducing the occurrence of thromboembolism, a severe COVID-19 complication.

While these findings are promising, further studies are necessary to comprehensively understand this effect. The work so far underlines the untapped potential of Andrographis Paniculata, revealing it as a plant with significant potential in the ongoing battle against throat ailments and the side effects of COVID-19.
